Mr. S Bhattacharya has been Director (Finance) of SAIL since February, 2007. An engineering graduate from one of the premier institutes of the country, Institute of Technology, BHU, Mr. Bhattacharya started his career in the steel melting shop of Rourkela Steel Plant of SAIL in 1974.

He worked in the SMS area for nearly a decade. After acquiring professional qualification of Cost Accountancy, he moved to the finance discipline where he worked in various positions including as Head of Finance of two of the plants/units of SAIL. He is also an accredited tutor for "Action Leadership' as certified by Industrial Society, UK and has worked in the Management Training Institute, Ranchi which is the HRD centre for senior executives of SAIL.

As Director (Finance), he has played a key role in the business ascendancy of SAIL in the recent past helping the company achieve a turnover of over US $ 10 billion and a net profit of nearly US $ 2 billion in FY'09. He is one of the key members of the board subcomittee facilitating approval of projects under the on-going modernisation and expansion plans of SAIL, on account of which the hot metal production capacity of the company will go up from a level of 14 million tonnes to over 26 million tonnes in the next 3-4 years.

He is also directly involved in raising resources for this modernisation and expansion programme of SAIL.
