Michael Flaherty, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner

Mr. Flaherty took up his position in Buffalo in August 2006. As Canada’s Senior Trade Commissioner he is responsible for the delivery of the commercial programming of the Consulate General in Central and Upstate NY, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Consulate’s commercial program focuses on trade and investment development, as well as science and technology linkages.
Prior to his posting in Buffalo, Mr. Flaherty was the Consul and Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate General in Atlanta where he managed the investment & corporate relations program for the Southeast US.
Michael joined in the Department of Industry in 1990 and held several senior positions with Canada’s Investment Promotion Agency, Industry Canada’s Small Business Secretariat and the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
Prior to joining Industry Canada, Michael spent 6 years on parliament Hill in Ottawa as a political assistant to a Member of Parliament, the Minister of State for Small Business, the Minister of Agriculture, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of Canada.
Michael received a BA from the University of Western Ontario 1984, is married, and has two children.
Mr. Pacileo is the director of Informa's ShipNet Services, which provides strategic transportation consulting, transportation management services and logistics transportation services for all modes of transportation. Mr. Pacileo has extensive US and international experience in all modes of transportation, including: marine ocean and inland operations; rail fleet management and operations; packaged over-the-road truck and bulk truck operations; terminal operations; and transportation planning. Mr. Pacileo's 30 years of experience ranges from developing transportation management outsourcing programs to integrating acquired new businesses into a streamlined transportation process while incorporating synergies to improve service and cost levels. Mr. Pacileo has directed and managed transportation organizations and led multi-functional areas and teams in defining new structures for integrating and improving transportation organizations. He also has developed distribution networks for launching new products and performed distribution modeling analyses to evaluate efficient distribution lanes and service requirements. In particular, he has provided strategic vision and detailed management direction that consistently has led to outstanding individual and team performance. He received his bachelor's degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, majoring in international marine transportation with a minor in computer science. He has spent a year at sea on maritime cargo vessels and spent 10 years in the US Naval Reserve. He attended the University of Tennessee's Executive Logistics Program and a dynamic Executive Leadership program at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has been a member of several transportation and logistics organizations, including The National Industrial Transportation League, Council of Supply Chain Professionals (previously CLM), The Fertilizer Institute Transportation Committee (performing as a board member and past president), and a board member of The National Waterways Association.

Angie was born and raised in Weston, West Virginia. She graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
Her experience with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers includes over 30 years of management in all facets of Operations, Engineering, Construction, and Programs and Project Management for Civil Works and Military Programs. She began her career with the Huntington District during the construction of the Stonewall Jackson Dam, and subsequently worked at the Gulf Coast Area Office out of Jacksonville District and the Savannah District.
Angie currently serves as the Navigation Program Manager for the South Atlantic Division with responsibility for oversight of the GI, CG and O&M navigation and dredging activities. Her responsibilities include management of a $200 million dollar Navigation Program encompassing all Federal harbors and channels and 32 locks and dams in the Southeast.
Angie is married to Steve Premo who is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They have two daughters, Stephanie who is married and currently lives in Kurdistan and Rachael, who is attending the University of Georgia.
Mr. Ryan is a Senior Vice President for American Commercial Lines in Jeffersonville, Indiana. His team has national responsibilities for new and existing business development of ACL’s transportation services solutions. He also is a member of the Summit Contracting, LLC Board of Managers. Prior to joining ACL in 2005, Mr. Ryan served as Senior Vice President and General Manager for McCollister’s Transportation Systems, Inc. His career includes 21 years with Class 1 railroads as well. He held various positions at CSX Corporation, including VP of Sales and VP Agricultural Products. Mr. Ryan began his career with Canadian National after earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from State University of New York.
Joel Valenzuela is the Department Head of Trade Development for the Port of San Diego. In this capacity, he and his department are responsible for commercial cargo business development for the Port's maritime division. The Port of San Diego handles approximately 3.2 metric tons of cargo annually, specializing in "niche" commodities such as automobiles, perishables (fruits), steel, lumber, cement/sand and machinery. Mr. Valenzuela has been with the Port ofSan Diego for over 10 years and holds a bachelors degree in Economics from University of California San Diego, a Masters Degree in Public Administration, and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University.
